They are about the room — the stained glass, the high ceilings, the fans that people describe as a showstopper, the brick and the light and the two seating areas inside and out. It is the rare small-town coffee house that is genuinely nice rather than merely present.
What to order
The raspberry white chocolate scone comes up by name more than anything else. Beyond that: raspberry mocha, iced caramel macchiato, a decent whole-bean selection if you want to take some home, and — unexpectedly — chili, which is a real lunch rather than a pastry-case afterthought.
It is also a shop. Gift buyers consistently note the prices are gentler than the equivalent in a bigger town.
Why it matters if you have a ticket
Opens at seven, which makes it the downtown breakfast that Market Street and the theatres are both a short walk from. If you are in for a matinee, this is coffee and a scone beforehand without moving a car. If you are staying at the Charley Creek Inn, it is two minutes on foot.
It is also the natural pairing with a shopping afternoon — the boutiques are on the same few blocks, and Modoc’s is where people stop halfway through.
